Days Go By
On days when you don't see me
I am a mocking bird.
Cooing back the cries,
of power drills and butterflies
I make men's pulses race with astonished excitement.
The angry/afraid kind.
On days when I am with you
I am a lightning rod.
I attract trouble,
Like a horror movie stunt double
And d*mn if I don't hurt myself but it protects others.
The sorry/sweet kind.
On days when I am alone
I am a nobody.
Purpose unfulfilled,
I strive to become more skilled
So that when the day comes that I stand by you,
I can stand tall.
On days when you aren't with me
I am a mourning dove.
Come home, my love.
